Behind the Benefits: August 2026

Questions and Responses

When it comes to cataract surgery, your eye care is actually often covered under your medical benefits (Part B) rather than your routine vision benefits, since cataracts are considered a medical condition. Because coverage can vary a bit depending on your specific plan, the best next step is to give our Member Services team a call — they’ll be able to walk you through exactly what your plan covers and answer any questions specific to your situation.

Here’s some good news in the meantime: every one of our plans includes coverage for one pair of glasses or contacts after each cataract surgery, with a $0 copay for Medicare-covered eyewear. So you can rest easy knowing that piece is taken care of.

Yes, absolutely. SuperiorVision is always working behind the scenes to add new providers into their network. It’s an ongoing process, not just a once-a-year thing, so the list of providers is regularly growing and evolving.

We want to make sure you have plenty of great choices for your eye care, so if there’s ever a specific provider you’d love to see included, please don’t hesitate to let them know. They’re always happy to look into it. And if you’d like help finding current providers in your area, both Member Services and SuperiorVision customer service are glad to point you in the right direction.

Here’s how it works: let’s say your allowance is $400. That allowance goes toward the cost of your eligible eyewear, like your frames and standard lenses. However, there are a few extras that fall outside of that allowance, such as tints, progressive lenses, transition lenses, polishing and insurance on the eyewear. Those particular add-ons wouldn’t be covered by the $400.

Your allowance gives you wonderful flexibility to put toward your eyewear essentials. If you’re considering any of those extra features, it’s a great idea to ask your eye care provider up front what the total cost would look like so there are no surprises at checkout. And of course, if you ever want to double-check exactly what’s included, our Member Services team or SuperiorVision customer service team is always happy to help you sort through the details.

You can pick up your contact lenses through any routine vision provider who’s in-network with SuperiorVision, so you’ll have plenty of great options to choose from. If you are on a PPO plan, you may also have out-of-network coverage, which means you could potentially get your contacts from a provider outside the SuperiorVision network too.

Since every plan is a little different, the best way to know for sure what applies to you, including any copays or co-insurance you might expect, is to give our Member Services team or SuperiorVision customer service a quick call. They’ll be able to walk you through your specific coverage so you can shop with confidence and pick whatever works best for you!

The most reliable way to confirm your coverage is to reach out directly to SuperiorVision or our Member Services team. We’ll have the most accurate, up-to-date details about your specific plan and can give you a clear picture of what to expect, so there are no surprises when you’re ready to schedule your appointment or pick out your eyewear.

While your provider’s office is wonderful for your actual eye care, they may not always have the full details of your specific plan benefits on hand. So for anything benefit-related, we’re always just a phone call away and happy to help!

When you visit an in-network SuperiorVision provider, things are made really easy for you. Your allowance is applied right there at checkout, so you don’t have to pay out of pocket and wait to be reimbursed later. The provider simply deducts your allowance directly from your bill, and you’ll just be responsible for your copay and any amount that goes beyond your plan’s allowance.

Now, if your plan includes out-of-network coverage and you choose to see a provider outside our network, the process looks a little different. In that case, you’d pay for your services upfront, then submit a Member Reimbursement Claim Form along with your itemized receipts. From there, we’ll get you reimbursed up to your plan’s out-of-network allowance limit.

Either way, we’re here to help make the process as smooth as possible. So if you ever have questions along the way, don’t hesitate to reach out!

Yes, treatment for macular degeneration, including those important injections, would typically be covered! It just falls under your medical vision coverage rather than your routine vision benefits, since SuperiorVision benefits are specifically designed for routine eye care. Medically necessary eye injections used to treat conditions like wet age-related macular degeneration are something your medical plan would help take care of.

One thing to keep in mind is that certain medical injectable drugs may require prior authorization or step therapy first. Work closely with both your provider and our Member Services team. They can help confirm whether prior authorization is needed for your specific treatment and walk you through what your costs might look like.

We know dealing with a diagnosis like this can feel overwhelming, so please don’t hesitate to lean on us for support along the way. We’re here to help make this as smooth as possible for you.

Yes, Superior Vision has a solid network of providers in Delaware for you to choose from.

Here’s the important part to keep in mind: your Johns Hopkins Advantage MD plan has a specific service area, and receiving care outside of that service area could result in out-of-network costs. So before scheduling your appointment, we’d love for you to confirm with Member Services or SuperiorVision customer service that the provider you wish to see is within your plan’s service area and that the location is in-network.

If your plan doesn’t include out-of-network coverage for routine vision, you’d be responsible for the full cost of services and eyewear in that case. We just want to help you avoid any surprises, so please don’t hesitate to reach out before your visit. We’re happy to help you confirm!

As of February 1, 2026, Warby Parker is an in-network provider with SuperiorVision for all Medicare plans, including Advantage MD.

You’re exactly right. For your routine vision services, you’ll want to use the provider finder on SuperiorVision’s website, since that’s where you’ll find the network specifically for routine care like eye exams and eyewear.

The standard provider finder on the Advantage MD website does let you search for optometrists too, but those results are showing providers who are in-network for medical vision services, not routine vision. So even though you found an optometrist there, it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re in-network for your routine benefits through Superior Vision.

To make sure everything lines up smoothly, it’s always best to search directly on Superior Vision’s site for routine care.

Unfortunately, Zenni is not currently in-network with Superior Vision for our routine vision plans, so purchases made there wouldn’t be covered under your benefit.

The good news is, there are plenty of wonderful in-network providers who can help you find eyewear that fits your style and budget while making the most of your routine vision benefit. If you’d like, Member Services and SuperiorVision customer service are happy to help you find some great in-network options near you!

You can simply bring your regular Advantage MD member ID card with you to your appointment, and that will take care of everything. One less thing to worry about!

You can reach Superior Vision at 800-879-6901, and their friendly team is available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 9 p.m. (ET). Don’t hesitate to give them a call. They’re happy to help with any questions you have!

We’re so sorry to hear you’re dealing with this. That sounds really frustrating. We’ve already asked our Member Services team to dig into this further on your behalf.

In the meantime, please don’t feel like you have to navigate this alone. If you’re ever unable to resolve something directly with your provider, you can always reach out to us or contact SuperiorVision directly. We’re here and ready to help you find a resolution.

For your routine eye exams, you’ll want to search the SuperiorVision provider directory rather than the standard Johns Hopkins Advantage MD provider finder. SuperiorVision has a wonderful, extensive listing of optometrists who are in-network specifically for routine vision services.

Just a helpful heads-up: if you search for optometrists on the standard Advantage MD provider finder instead, those results would show providers in-network for medical vision services, not routine care. So to make sure your routine exam is covered the way you’d expect, Superior Vision’s directory is definitely the way to go!

Retina specialists would fall under your medical vision coverage rather than your routine vision benefits. Our Member Services team is happy to help you find in-network retina specialists near you. Just give us a call, and we’ll get you connected with the right provider!

It can actually go either way, depending on the reason for your visit.

If dilation is done as part of a general, preventive eye exam — say, your routine annual checkup to update your glasses or contact lens prescription, with no specific symptoms or diagnosed eye disease — it would typically fall under your routine vision benefits.

On the other hand, if dilation is needed to diagnose or treat a specific eye disease or medical condition, it would fall under your medical vision coverage instead.

So really, it comes down to the “why” behind the visit. If you’re ever unsure which applies to your situation, Member Services is always happy to help you sort it out!

Most of our plans cover one routine eye exam per year with a $0 copay when you see an in-network provider. That exam covers the evaluation and refraction — basically, the doctor determining your prescription. However, the actual eyewear itself, like single vision lenses, works a little differently. Rather than being included for free with the exam, those lenses would typically be covered under your plan’s supplemental eyewear allowance.

Depending on your specific plan, that allowance gives you a set dollar amount — either yearly or every two years — that you can put toward frames, contact lenses, or eyeglass lenses, including single vision. So the exam gets you the prescription, and your eyewear allowance helps take care of the lenses themselves.

Member Services would be happy to help you check the specifics of your plan so you know exactly what to expect.

Some of our plans do include coverage for refractions under routine vision benefits, but it can vary depending on your specific plan. To find out for sure whether refractions are included in yours, please reach out to our Member Services team. We’ll be happy to confirm the details so you know exactly what to expect!

When it comes to copays, you won’t be double-charged in most cases. As long as your routine exam and dilated eye exam are performed on the same day, by the same provider, and both fall within your VisionServices benefit, only one copay applies. Your provider’s office will handle sorting out which portions apply to routine versus medical coverage on the billing side. That part is taken care of behind the scenes.

Just keep in mind, if those services happen to take place on different days or with a different provider, a separate copay could apply in that case.

If you ever want to double-check how a specific visit will be billed, we’re always happy to help you sort through it beforehand so you know what to expect!
